I'm craving Sant'Ambrogio right about now. A Cuba Libre if it's hot out, a bottle of wine on a less-sticky night, a Tequila Sunrise or, dare I say it, a Long Island if I'm looking to get plastered quickly. It's all 6 euros anyway, so it doesn't matter what you choose, it's all the same on your wallet. I'm feeling in the mood to throw down the same pseudo-Italian line to the bartender: "Un/a ________ e un Americano" (that was Lisa's drink, the Americano, but I hated it) - then pay our 12 euro and go searching for a free spot on the church steps: anywhere that isn't covered in cigarette butts and isn't near any sketchy-looking men. Usually we were pretty good at finding spots, and if we were talked to, Lisa would tell them very bluntly that we don't want to talk to them and that they should go away. That always made me laugh. I can't do that. If someone talks to me, I'm cold but I'll still answer, although half-assed, usually pretend I don't speak Italian, and then leave. Which sucks, because why should I have to leave? Maybe your skills at being bitchy grow after years of living in Italy.

That's why Italy's a good place for me. It makes me into someone I'm not, a better me, someone I should be. Someone who's relaxed, who doesn't care about plans, who asks "What's the worst that can happen?" Someone who walks a lot and controls what she eats, someone who writes a lot and drinks a lot and occasionally speaks Italian, real Italian, not that textbook crap that they teach you in class. Someone who finds extreme pleasure in finding that perfect pair of shoes, who pairs it with the perfect dress and then struts down the street listening to "When The Levee Breaks" and feeling like hot shit. I know all that stuff can be done in New York, but it doesn't come so naturally for me.

That being said. Here are some songs that bring up significant images of Florence from this summer:

Avenged Sevenfold's "Gunslinger" reminds me of walking along Via dei Servi to the Universita' di Firenze, by the round building and the students' bar, hanging up signs for my project on a hot day.

Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" reminds me of being emo in Boboli Gardens, lying out in the grass under the shade and listening to my less-happy music.

Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks" reminds me of any long walk I took around the city, primarily while wearing heels, like the walk from The Fiddler's Elbow to the Duomo at night.

Avenged Sevenfold's "Afterlife" reminds me of the walk back from Sant'Ambrogio, down Corso and to my place on Via Calzaiuoli, at 1 or 2 in the morning, where I would wear my headphones and walk quickly so no one would approach me, and no one ever did.

Max Pezzali's "Torno Subito" reminds me of basically everything in the last two days in Florence, but primarily of sitting on the Duomo when it first occurred to me to listen to that song, and then up in the airplane, or in the airport, or other places like that that I never want to think about ever.

Everything I have by Calico Jack reminds me of the train - any train, any length, no matter where I was going.

Marvelous 3's "Sugarbuzz" reminds me of riding down in the elevator at my apartment for my very first trip outside of the day.

Marvelous 3's "Supernatural Blonde" reminds me of the bus ride to Siena before the Palio.

Hüsker Dü's "Something I Learned Today" reminds me of cleaning alone in our place in Formia, waiting for Lisa and Cherisse to get back from work.

Hüsker Dü's "Pink Turns To Blue" reminds me of wandering around in the east-Cavour area by the Fortezza, before my class trip to Fiesole.

Bruce Springsteen's "Badlands" reminds me of sitting out on the terrace at my apartment and wondering why I was listening to such a pro-America singer in the middle of Italy.

Queen's "I Want To Break Free" reminds me of the airport in Zurich, but on the way to Florence, when I was in line to get on the plane that would bring me back to my city.

Avenged Sevenfold's "Dear God" reminds me of it all. (But if I really had to pick, I'd say walking across the Carraia from the Oltrarno to the Centro Storico and noticing that someone had written, on a lamppost, "Anche dopo la morte ti amero'".)

avenged sevenfold - "dear god"

Wow. I have one more full day in Florence. This sucks so hard. I do not want to leave. I'm putting my foot down.

Okay, recap. Saturday night I went up to the Roman Amphitheater at Fiesole and saw David Byrne. Oh my god, that concert was FANTASTIC. Jesus. Christ. It was so good. I'm still in awe of how amazing it was. First of all, best venue ever? Second of all, so there was Mr. Byrne himself, plus three backup singers, a backup band, and three dancers. Like. Crazy dancers, too. Every song was choreographed, but not like stupid pop choreography, real weird and crazy dancing. The dancers were going absolutely nuts, throwing themselves across the stage, and it was all programmed in with the lights as well, and David danced as well. I thought he was only gonna be playing his new stuff, but he ended up playing a lot of Talking Heads stuff as well. The stuff he played that I actually knew was...
"Heaven"
"Once in a Lifetime"
"Houses in Motion"
"Life During Wartime"
"Take Me To The River"
"Road To Nowhere"
"Burning Down The House"

He did five encores. People were going completely crazy, dancing and screaming and singing along, like, we would not let him leave the stage. Annnnd during "Burning Down The House" they all came out in pink tutus. All of them. David Byrne, in a giant pink tutu. How fantastic. It was bloody brilliant. He's such a feel-good guy, too, so genuine, you can tell he really loves his fans and is just a generally awesome guy. Definitely an awesome way to spend my last Saturday in Florence. And hey, the buses ran late so I didn't even have to sleep on the streets of Fiesole!!

After the concert, I went out with Erica and her two friends who were staying here. We just drank at the Duomo, pretty much, and when we were ready to go out it was 2 am and all the bars were closed. Awesome. Except for the Red Garter, which is this sketchy club/bar/karaoke place/restaurant (?) that caters solely to American students. That was the only place that was open. By the time we got there there was so much alcohol on the floor that my feet were literally sticking to it. And we were four of the only people there, and there were Italian guys around us in a circle and then sketchy American girls grinding up on sketchy Italian guys, and... needless to say we left pretty soon. All the stupid American typical frat guys love that place. You know, some people actually come to Florence and say, out loud, that they don't want anything to do with Italian culture and they just want to go to all the American bars! I haven't met any of those people, but I met people who met them. It makes me disgusted. Stay in your own goddamn country, douchebags.

The next day was Sunday and I stayed in bed basically all day. Then I got sick. WTF. I've been in bed with a cold basically this whole week. I went out on Tuesday night though with Jenn and Mary, two people I met in Switzerland, and that was fun. We went to BeBop for Beatles' Night. The club was shut down since last year but it's been reopened in the same location and it's basically the same as it was before, only the bar is more chaotic, which sucks, but whatever. We had fun. Had a few too many tequila shots for my situation, but it worked.

Wednesday I skipped class because I had one more absence left and really had no reason to go. I was really depressed so I went to San Lorenzo with my roommates and did retail therapy. I bought...
HOT PINK LEATHER GLOVES.
Two pashminas
A leather bracelet
A pretty murano glass necklace

I am all set.

Tonight... I dunno what I'm going to do, but I'll do something. Class is all over now, so it's just doing bugger-all now, I suppose. Felicia and Mary, two of my friends, are leaving tomorrow, which sucks balls because I'm gonna miss them, and I can't believe I have to say goodbye to people today. I'll update about the rest of the trip from home when I have nothing to do and no car.

010. ItaliaWave Love Festival a Livorno!

(Updating much?)

Wow. So yesterday I left my apartment at 11:30 am and I didn't return until early this morning, at 5:45 am. But it was SO MUCH FUN. Lisa and I hopped a train to Livorno and got there at around 2. Then we had to make our way to the football stadium, Stadio Picchi, where the concert was being held. The concert is this four-day music festival that takes place all around Livorno, at four different stages around the city (which I think is dumb to have it all split up like that), but Stadio Picchi is the main stage where Placebo was playing. So after a while of being confused and lost, we just hopped a bus there and navigated our way from the unknown bus stop to the stadium... by pure instinct, actually. Which was good. We walked around the stadium a long-ass time trying to find out where to buy tickets. We walked through roads that were covered in dirt and trash, and it was 90-something degrees out so it felt like a wasteland desert, and it was completely filled with goth kids, because apparently all Italian goths listen to Placebo. Finally we find out the ticket place doesn't open 'til 5, so we went down to the beach. The beach was actually not a beach at all, but this one strip of concrete that stuck out into the water and was pretty high above the water level. On one side of the pier the water was fine, but on the other side there was this massive pool of ocean crap and trash. Livorno's pretty sketch, it's not dangerous but it's a port town with nothing else in it, and it's super industrial. Also apparently Tuscany's gay and lesbian capital? My gaydar was going off like woah, it was amazing. So yeah, there were also no bathrooms so I couldn't change into my bathing suit bottoms (I had to change into my top on the street without taking my shirt off and with these guys staring, it was interesting), so Lisa went into the water and I just stayed on the pier and made her splash my legs. We hung out there for about an hour and a half and then made our way back to the ticket booth. There was a lot of schlepping, actually, especially since it was so damn hot and there isn't really much to do in Livorno, so to get anywhere you have to walk a long-ass way.

We got the tickets at 5, but only after having to stare at this really obese man who had his shirt off and wrapped around his head and his pants were too low and he was exposing his hairy coinslot. There's an image I'll never get out of my head. Then we peaced, again, since the doors didn't open til 7 or 7:30. We went down the other side of the beach looking for SOMEWHERE that we could get beer and go to the bathroom! You'd think that would be easy, but no. But eventually we found a little beach hut café and just drank there and 'freshened up,' and by that time the clouds came in and it wasn't quite as disgustingly hot out. Then we went on a huge trek to find a supermarket, as this one sign promised us it was "straight ahead for 2 minutes..." What we didn't know that on the other side of the sign, the arrow was pointing a completely different direction. Needless to say we never found it.

When we got into the concert we were amazed that basically no one was there. I mean, this is meant to be a huge festival, and Italians are mad obsessed with Placebo these days, but it was practically empty. Granted there were five bands that went on before Placebo, but in America the huge stadium would have been half-full by the third act. It was so Italian. People not showing up 'til the last minute. The opening acts were kind of weird, but there were some that I liked and Lisa didn't. We met up with Becca somewhere in the fourth opening act, she had to show up late, and then we just drank beer and chilled 'til Placebo was on. We were amazed at how Italians don't know how to party at all... they were just sitting on the ground during the opening acts, and the ones that were standing were doing just that: standing, not dancing or moving or anything. I was expecting mosh pits, but nothing. I guess that's good though, 'cause I don't like mosh pits.

Anyway. Ahhhh PLACEBO WAS SO GOOD!!! I don't even know them all that well but I was getting really excited. Their sound, first of all, was excellent. It was really crisp and clean, and loud enough but not too loud... props to the sound guy. And second, they're not the kind of band that's awesome on CD but shitty in person, like, Brian can actually sing in real life, granted I think his voice is super whiny anyway, but at least it's consistent. They started out playing a bunch of songs I didn't know, but they played enough that I did. They played (as many as I can remember, somewhat in order)...
"Ashtray Heart"
"Battle For The Sun"
"Speak In Tongues"
"For What It's Worth"
"Sleeping With Ghosts"
"Every Me Every You"
"Black Eyed"
"Special Needs"
"Special K"
"Come Undone"
"Follow the Cops Back Home"
"Happy You're Gone"
"Never-Ending Why"
"Meds"
"Infra-Red"
"The Bitter End"
"Taste In Men"

There was more, but I don't remember. I couldn't see much, we were in the back and there was this goth girl with huge hair standing right in front of me, and a tall guy with huge hair in front of her. But oh well. I could see Brian if I stood on my toes, which I did. He was wearing a tight, half-open button-down shirt, of course he was. Oh, Brian. Ahh, but it was so good. I thought it was weird that they ended with "Taste In Men," though. It's not really an ending song. "The Bitter End" would have been better, they played that second to last. Oh well.

Then afterwards it was... madness trying to get back to the station. Becca and I had to pee really badly so we resorted to peeing in the street. Yessss. Then there was a free shuttle bus that took people to the station and the other venues, but it was crazier trying to get on the bus than it was in the actual concert. We did get on the first one we tried to get on, but it's 'cause we're good pushers. And we were squished right up against the glass that separates us from the driver.

The ride back to Florence was a nightmare. We got to the train station at 2:30 and had to catch the 3:11 night train to Pisa, and then the 4:15 regionale to Florence. The night train really is every bit as sketchy as everyone says it is. We couldn't get a seat so we were squished up by the doors, and there were a ton of really oddball characters. We're pretty sure there was a couple of Madames or whatever you call them and a group of prostitutes with them, but either way they couldn't sit still and they kept parading between our carozza and the next one, and they had these huge huge plastic bags of... something, I don't know what, that they just threw at our feet, so we had even less room to stand. Then there was this girl who had two dogs that weren't muzzled and they looked kind of... dirty, and odd. And there was an older woman who was going backpacking and was FREAKING OUT about when to get off the train, and pushing ahead of everyone and being the opposite of chill. The guys who worked on the train were also douchebags, probably because they work on the night train. Ehhhh. Never again. Then I just passed out on the train to Florence. And then I stumbled home, and now I'm here! And now I'm exhausted. Soooo exhausted. BUT David Byrne is playing in Fiesole tonight, so I must wake up!

Owwwww, my head.

I suppose I should update everyone on what's been happening, shouldn't I?

- Last Saturday my roommates and I went out to a club in Le Cascine called Central Park. It's pretty far away from the Centro so not too many Americans go there... I mean, everyone's heard of it, and there are definitely Americans there, but it's mostly Italians in there. There were a lot of annoying boys who wouldn't leave us alone. Groan. The club's cool, though, 'cause it has five rooms in it that all (supposedly) play different kinds of music, but it's actually just 4 different tracks of techno and one hip hop room, haha. But one of the rooms is outside and it's massive, which was sweet. And another one is completely pitch black and is shaped like a circle, and everyone dances in the middle, and there are strobe lights everywhere and the circle was lined with hired dancers who were in their underwear and covered in red paint. It was kickass. We stayed out until 4 in the morning, which my body did not like very much...

- Then last Sunday Erica, Eliza, and I went to the beach at Viareggio (as you can see from my pictures). We had to get up super early and I only got three hours of sleep from the night before. Just as we had stamped our tickets at the train station, the train pulled away... it was so sad. So we just bummed around for an hour in Florence and caught the next train. I was feeling nauseous as hell on the train ride but thankfully I didn't puke. There were these sketchy guys sitting across from Erica and Eliza who were playing this really loud and obnoxious music. Whatever. The beach was a 20 minute walk from the train station, and when we got there we found out that all of the beaches are private except for one tiny one at the end of the strip, where no one knew where it was. So we ended up just renting an umbrella and chairs from one of the private beaches, and it was great. I really liked it because it was 90-something degrees out and we had the Mediterranean on our sides, but then in front of us we could see the Alpi Apuane mountains that were covered in snow. My mind was confused. Then later that night I saw Lisa for the first time since I left Florence before. We got aperitivo at Popcafe in Santo Spirito and just chilled out. It was nice.

- Classes started on Monday. I'm taking a class called Travel Writing, and it's really sweet. There are only six people in my class, and we're learning how to balance personal reflection with carefully chosen description with historical aspects. Plus my teacher's really nice, and we get to write something at least once every day. Then later that night I hopped the #25 bus to to my old campus!!! It was so amazing being there. I thought I'd never get to see the villa again. I hung out with Ash and met her friends from the program, and walked around the villa grounds looking for hedgehogs and pheasants, and then we all walked down into the city and I took them to Gelateria La Carraia and Dolce Vita. It was really nice. I like pulling people to Santo Spirito as often as possible.

- Not much happened on Tuesday - I went to class and then had no plans for that night, so I took a walk by myself around the Duomo and into Piazza della Repubblica, just taking pictures and writing in my journal. It was just a really nice night. I wanted to stay out much later, but once they turned the carousel off the sketchy guys came out and wouldn't leave me alone, so I went back to my apartment.

- On Wednesday the girls and I were going to go up to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset, but we spent way too much time down in the city and never made it up there. We got dinner at Gatto e la Volpe, this restaurant that every single study abroad person becomes obsessed with but that I had never gone to before. Turns out it's right by our house, so we went. Everyone there speaks English and is super friendly, which is probably why everyone likes it so much. Our waiter was hilarious. He loved the fact that most of us are from New York and he kept saying "Fuggedaboutit" and "How YOU doin'?" Lolz. Then we got gelato by the Ponte Vecchio and took pictures and this Moroccan guy made us bracelets and hit on us. Lolz. I left like halfway through that ordeal and then found out that he like... licked Erica's face? Or something? I dunno. Then later that night Janet and I went out to the Lion's Fountain, another Americanized bar that study abroad students are obsessed with, 'cause her friend was playing a concert there. It was chill, we didn't stay out very late.

- On Thursday we went back to Gatto e la Volpe... haha. We must have looked like stalkers. But it's cool. Our waiter Alex (Alessandro? forse, non so) keeps giving us discounts, so that works with me. Then Janet and I went to karaoke with her friends from the church. It was so much fun. The place we went to - Michael Collins, I think it was called? It's in Signoria - was hella chill. And people actually played music that I like? Haha. I had a little freakout when someone sang The Cure. Then Janet, Dylan (her friend), and I went to Twice... ehh. It's a club but I wasn't feeling it at all. There was this one guy who would not let me go. Like, literally. I wanted to punch him in the nutsack. But I had my friends there to protect me, so it's cool. We didn't stay long, and then Dylan walked us home. The Duomo looks really nice at night. I love that I have to pass the Duomo to get to my home...o. Muahaha.

- I don't have class on Friday, so I set off early for San Gimignano by myself. It took about an hour and a half to get there with the change at Poggibonsi, but god, when I was there... it was amazing. It felt so incredible just to be back there. Of course my camera battery died as soon as I got there, even though I had charged it the whole night before, so I had to take pictures sparingly. But god... that place is like ecstasy. It's incredible. You're up there on this hill in a medieval town that still has its walls up, and all around you the countryside stretches for miles, so much that you can't tell which way is north and you can't see any other landmarks around you. The second time I ever went I found this empty playground where no one goes and it's covered in graffiti, and I went up there and just wrote a lot. That's what I did this time - I rushed to the playground and wrote, and then I rushed up to the courtyard of the wine museum, ordered a class of Vernaccia, and wrote some more, and then I went down outside the wall and wrote some more. God. This place is incredible. But when I got home I was so tired I could barely move, and then my roommates tell me that they're going out for dinner and then to Michelangelo, so I had to rush to shower and make dinner and then go out to meet them. Then we walked alllll the way up there, watched the sun set, took pictures, and then walked back. They went out to Central Park later that night, but I was so exhausted that I couldn't even sit down, I needed to be lying down, so I took a night off.

- Yesterday (Saturday) Ash and I went to dinner at Lisa's house. Her place is incredible. It's in Le Cure, just off the map, and it's on the ground floor so she has a beautiful garden with all kinds of plants in it, and she has a table outside and a massive bedroom and it's in such a great location. I'm jealous. She made us dinner and we had a lot of wine... umm... a lot. A lot a lot. We went through three bottles, but I don't think it was split evenly and I think I had more than my share... because my head is killing me right now and I was sufficiently plastered for the rest of the night, and even when I woke up briefly this morning I was still shattered. Whoops. Well it's wine and we're in Italy, so it's okay.

We were going to go horseback riding through Chianti today, but it's raining and thundering so no.
